The minimum you should study in this Country should 3 years for a bachelor degree +1 year for a master. The bear minimum you have to study (in Italy) is 3 years to get a Bachelor degree in any engineering you like. I would personally recommend you do pursue a Master in something related as it gives you a concrete extra help in getting a better salary or better position (I decided to deepen my knowledge of Artificial Intelligence, which came together with some specific knowledge on general engineering). In Italy a Master is 2 years, in UK should be 1 year everywhere. A PhD can help into getting a job as research engineer, which is a special type of engineer which finds never new things never tried before and advises other engineers on doing them or not and how. It is not required to do a PhD to became an engineer but it does give you a further push in your career and day-to-day life activities, a PhD can least between 3-4 years up to 6-7 years.
