The first GTA game I played was GTA I (2D visual from the top), and what I liked of it (and still love) is the freedom given to the player of playing as he/she wants and to follow the main story line at the speed he/she likes. The problem of such games, like Daggerfall or Elders Scrolls: Oblivion (sorry I know this are games for granpas but this is what I was playing) is that a large freedom comes at the price of a weak plot. In Daggerfall you can even buy a house, a horse and became a merchant or an assassin (back in the 1990s it was a big thing) but the main story is lot very engaging. Similarly, Oblivion reduces partially your freedom (you are born an adventurer and you will die as such) but has a great plot, it falls short, in my opinion, on the exploration side as at some point the game became just a roaming around killing demons and turns into monotony. Fallout 3 suffers the same problem as well (but Fallout 1 and 2 don’t and those are also two games which I also absolutely love). Sooner or later a single player video game will became monotonous (doing the same thing over and over), nothing you can do about it, if you mind, you should have better played Dungeons and Dragons.

In GTA this happens after very long time: if you are bored of the main plot you can start a gang war using a F15 fighter or a tank, or you can deliver some pizzas, or roam around punching cars until they explode, or assault boats as a pirate would do, or start to destroy and anger police and see how long you can live, or start a mass fight among passers by, or run in a clothing shop with a motorbike, or drive an ambulance to save people destroying everything else in the process…. just to tell you few things I was used to enjoy a lot. The game also gives you plenty of statistics and details to prevent you getting bored and promotes such kind of creative play opening the way to your imagination. Since the main plot is robust, you can “take a rest” from world destruction and join a “plain” criminal life any time at the speed you like and still enjoy it.

I discovered this game by complete chance, as it was part of a compilation of 4 games, and back then (around early 2000s), what impressed me was the opportunity of going rampage while at the same time the main missions (and the secondary missions, which were very abundant) were really a lot of fun and adrenaline. I agree it is really a game aimed to boys and all the list of things I mentioned above might sound cruel, but for a then-boy it was a lot of fun. I’ve played almost all GTAs except for GTA V, and my favorite one is GTA San Andreas, whose only shortcoming was the bad use of the countryside, I would have really liked to do some boxing with some dangerous animal for example, and I think the move they did in the sequel (limiting all to one city) was not a wise one.
